SRS Audio Sandbox is a sound enhancement tool. SRS is famous for specializing in audio enhancement.
SRS WOW effects are already included with Windows Media Player.

We turn them on for some bass boost. The sound enhancement doesn’t cause much distortion in the quality of output. Now, you can install the program if you need more. The program works as a virtual driver for a separate sound card. Even if you have a 2.0 speaker, the virtual sound card can mimic a 5.1 system. The audio output is routed through this virtual hardware to the output device of your choice. The audio stream is modified according to the selected settings.

The program is small, and quietly sits in the system tray. Options include surround sound, 360 degree headphone, etc. We can define the frequency cut-off level, dialog clarity level, SRS TruBass, etc. Default settings for Laptop Speakers, 5.1, Headphones, are included.

There are some problems with selecting the default hardware. Some devices may not be in the list of output devices. Also, the default sound settings in Windows 7 may not work. Always install the demo software before buying.

Pros

  • Great sound quality

Cons

  • Problems with selecting output device

DivX is a MPEG4 video codec program. The website delivers a small web installer about 850 KB (v 2.0.4.2) for the downloading process. In the past the installer package was roughly 23 MB (v 10.x.x.x) including all options. I've used the DivX codec packages from the earliest versions (3.x) through the current version 7 suite. The codec package is transparent in operation, being used by the operating system to playback DirectX video content with MPEG4 encoding. The web player works well inside a browser for DivX coded content online. The DivX player works well in my experience, however is not my favorite, but it only activates on .divx extension files if configured as such, allowing you to name files with .avi extensions to play back in Windows Media Player, or your other favorite player. The DivX Converter is a great program, though a bit simple for some. It has helped me transcode many sequential VOB files (mp2) into one AVI file of lesser size (mp4), selectable in resolution.
